What is Jomtien like?

Jomtien is a district of Pattaya, on Thailand's eastern gulf coast. Four places are covered here in detail, led by Thepprasit Night Market at 4.5★. The mix runs to shopping, beaches & beach clubs and family & kids. Each one carries a first-person verdict from Rob, a local.

Jomtien is the long, gently curving beach immediately south of Pattaya, over Pratumnak Hill. It's noticeably more laid-back than Pattaya Beach — wider sand, a slower pace, and a strip that leans towards families, long-stayers and beachgoers rather than the nightlife crowd.

The beach road has a steady run of seafood restaurants and beach clubs, the Thepprasit Night Market fires up at the weekend, and it's an easy base if you want the sea on your doorstep but a quieter evening.

If you do not like beaches, there is no reason to stay here. Jomtien is about beach life and very little else — that is its strength and the only thing it does.

It is also one of the best places in Pattaya to watch the sun go down, which surprises people who assume you need a rooftop or a clifftop restaurant for that. Rent a deckchair, buy a beer from one of the vendors working the sand, and watch the sun set behind Koh Larn. It costs almost nothing and beats most of the paid options.
