The Bang Phra Loop: Reservoir, Hilltop Temple & a Forest Waterfall

Almost every day trip out of Pattaya runs south down the coast or out to an island. This one goes the other way — north into the green hills behind Si Racha, where the Khao Khiao massif holds forest, a big reservoir and quiet winding roads that feel nothing like the Sukhumvit strip. Start at Bang Phra Reservoir, about forty minutes up the road: a wide stretch of water ringed by a quiet lane that locals walk, run and cycle, with Thai food stalls dotted along the shore — better as a morning leg-stretch than a destination in itself. From there climb to Wat Khao Mai Daeng, a hilltop temple with broad views back over the valley; a free shuttle runs from the car park to the top, and visitors queue for blessings from the resident monk. The main event is Namtok Chan Ta Then, a four-tier waterfall with an easy forest trail past big trees and butterflies — wear shoes with grip, as the boulders get slippery, and come in or just after the rainy season when the water is actually flowing. Finish at The Hidden Falls, a jungle café a couple of minutes away where the tables stand in a shallow stream and miniature goats wander between them. Khao Kheow Open Zoo sits in the same hills, but it swallows a full day on its own — make it the day, or save it for another one.
